ACE of Paws FAQs

How long does an initial evaluation take?

Check-in is 15 minutes before your scheduled appointment, and your pet will be dropped off for the first 45 minutes. Please plan for a total of 2 hours. You will receive a tour of the facility before speaking with Dr. Esquivel about her exam findings and the treatment plan for your pet.

How do I know how much my pet’s treatments will cost?

During the initial evaluation, Dr. Esquivel will create a custom treatment plan based on:

  • The condition(s) we will be treating
  • The size of your pet
  • How cooperative your pet is during treatment
Are all patients allowed to use the underwater treadmill?

No. Some conditions prevent pets from safely using the underwater treadmill. These include:

  • Fecal and/or urinary incontinence (to protect water cleanliness for other patients)
  • Open wounds
  • Urinary tract infection

Pets with heart conditions or lung disease will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis by Dr. Esquivel.

Why is a current Rabies vaccination required?

Our policy on Rabies vaccines follows the state of New Mexico public health requirements and cannot be waived. The state requires that all pets have an up-to-date Rabies vaccination no exceptions, including letters from a DVM, medical waivers, or titers. As for other vaccines, we do not require anything beyond Rabies, though we do encourage pets to stay current on all recommended vaccinations.

Why can’t I be with my pet during the initial or follow-up evaluation?

We’ve found that having the owner present can distract patients, sometimes making them less willing to participate or more nervous. By allowing Dr. Esquivel to focus solely on your pet, we are able to obtain more accurate results for:

  • Range of motion measurements
  • Stance analysis
  • Lameness evaluations

You are welcome to wait in our comfortable lobby during this time.
